Perry was born the 25th of July 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Her first television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. But her parents would not allow her to act until she turned an adult because of the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry claimed she felt timid to perform during high school, but started doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry managed to get small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her back to California and she returned to work on stage. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie with her in the year 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She also played her older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role through an audition.
